As an NHS Cardiac Sonographer for almost 30 years I was used to caring for others, but hadn't realized the strain and tension I was putting on myself in order to achieve this in an ever more demanding workplace. As my pain and stiffness increased and my stamina diminished I visited physiotherapists, pain and orthopaedic consultants and was prescribed more and more medication but only gained temporary relief. Eventually I became unable to continue in my career due to Chronic Myofascial Pain and was also unable to do many of the things I had enjoyed previously such as walking, gardening and yoga and life became more of an existence than a joy.
I attended an Alexander Technique workshop organized by the Society of Radiographers and, encouraged by the reduction in pain I experienced, I decided to explore the technique further by taking a course of lessons. I then undertook teacher training at the Manchester Alexander Technique Training School and privately with Malcolm Williamson.
I discovered that not only was my pain significantly reduced so that I no longer needed medication, but also my mood was brighter and I was much calmer and more able to deal with the significant life challenges that I was facing. I was also able to take up my hobbies again and I had found a new career!
I teach AT at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
I would like to help you discover the benefits the Alexander Technique has to offer, as you discover your new way of being.
