As an Alexander teacher I don't teach you to 'do' anything but what you can learn is potentially far more important: how to 'not do' what you don't need! By leaving out the non-essential (often in the form of excess tension) you can retrain the muscle memory to make any movement simpler, more flowing and more effective: posture improves naturally without any extra effort to 'stand up straight'; tasks that were hard work become easier and with less chance of pain. It takes time to change the habits of a lifetime, but most people will start to feel the benefit after a few lessons or even after a few minutes.
I had my first lesson in 1992 to help with my piano playing. A few minutes into the lesson I could feel years of tension starting to unwind. After a few years of lessons, workshops and working on myself I signed up to the three-year teacher training course. I graduated in 2013 and set up a practice in Manchester. I now teach in my studio in Todmorden, in Saddleworth, Bury and at the MATTS Alexander teacher training school in Wilmslow. I served on the Council of STAT, our professional society, 2016-2021. In addition to the standard 1600 hour training I have taken courses in Neuroscience and Pain related to the Alexander Technique. In my previous career I was a research engineer and Professor of acoustics. I particularly enjoy working with musicians because that's where I came from myself but anyone with an open mind can benefit from Alexander Technique.
