Improve posture and movement by retraining muscle memory

Onetime session

Introductory talk and live demonstration of the Alexander Technique in action by renowned Alexander teacher Andy Moorhouse MSTAT.

Andy has been running an Alexander group on Friday afternoons at Tottington which is now closed to new members. If there is sufficient interest from this talk, Andy will consider starting a second group to run Friday mornings. Please contact Andy if you are interested.

Good posture is not about making an effort to 'stand up straight'. Anyone who has tried this will know that after a few minutes we get tired and are quickly back to where we were. Andy will argue that a lasting improvement in posture is about simplifying - making less, not more, effort. The question is, how?

Andy will introduce Alexander's main ideas and illustrate them through slides and simple practical demonstrations. The techniques were developed to help with Alexander's acting and are still used in performance art courses around the world. More recently, significant reductions in chronic back pain have been proven through clinical trials. Modern neuroscience helps us to understand how the techniques employed by Alexander teachers since the early 1900s can help to improve postural muscle tone.

There will also be a live demonstration of how, with a combination of verbal instruction and hands-on guidance, anyone can learn to perform a task with less effort and better posture.
