I developed lower back, neck and shoulder pain in my early twenties, which continued over many years. I visited osteopaths and did Pilates, but had no understanding of what was wrong or how I could approach life differently. As time went on I became more twisted and compressed and less mobile. I felt sure I was headed for pain, stiffness and immobility as I grew older but didn’t know what to do about it.
In 2009 I went to an introductory Alexander Technique group class at a local college. I realised my own body use – how I moved and went about my everyday activities – was at the heart of the problem. I realised I could find a way out of increasing discomfort through the Alexander Technique. I went on to have one-to-one lessons and then trained as an Alexander teacher at City Alexander Technique School from 2016 to 2019.
I’ve become more mobile and am no longer in pain. I’ve taken up cycling again after many years. I’ve re-discovered my natural balance and poise and now prioritise my own well-being. I’m more optimistic about moving into later life and can also deal more calmly with whatever life stresses come along. I teach private lessons and introductory group workshops in North London.
