In the list of turning points in my life I'd definitely include learning the Alexander Technique. Before that I had been through decades of on/off back, neck and shoulder pain. I wasn’t ill but had a growing sense of being uncomfortable in my own skin. I didn’t know why and had no idea how to explain it or where to go for help.
What I’ve learned since is how it’s possible to change deep-seated postural patterns that contribute to pain, stress and feeling ill at ease and out of balance. I’ve been able to change how I move, how I view life and how I go about everyday activities. It's taken time, but my experience of this process means I can guide and support others for as long it takes to change the way they use their bodies.
Initially I thought the Alexander Technique was only about posture. But it works on many levels, and I’ve become a quieter, calmer and more resilient version of myself. I breathe more deeply and use my voice more easily. Although the Covid-19 pandemic has tested my resilience, I’ve been able to deal with an unknown and stressful situation in a calm and balanced way. And by changing my own responses to stress I’m able to teach others how to discover their inner strength and calm, bringing more choice in how to react at difficult moments in daily life.
