My route into Alexander Technique is unusual in that my father (Anthony Spawforth) trained with FM Alexander in the 50s and I grew up taking it for granted that my father worked from home seeing private pupils. Nothing unusual about that until my school friends started asking me what my father did for a living! How would I tell people what the AT is?!
It never occurred to me that I would follow in his footsteps. Nevertheless, in 1984 I discovered the technique for myself, decided to train and did my teacher training in London with the Carringtons from 1987-90. It is only many years later that I really see the advantage I had to discovering the Technique early: stopping and reflecting rather than acting on my first reaction has been the foundation for a mindful life.
In 2012 I have also certified with the international Centre for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC). Both these methods involve stopping and reconsidering automatic behaviour and increasing our ability to chose a response that is most appropriate and beneficial to the situation. In my view, both these techniques compliment one another.
Alongside my teacher training with Walter and Dilys Carrington, the Alexander teachers who have most influenced my work are Margaret Goldie, John Hunter and of course my father.
My business - Restoring Connections - is also my spiritual path - and extends beyond what I teach into my own way of living, learning and being.
