I began Alexander lessons in 1997 because of a family history of serious back and neck conditions. I have remained largely free of such problems and gained many additional benefits. The technique has given me a way of addressing issues, enabling me to tackle the problem at its source to resolve it or at least prevent it becoming worse! Eventually I decided I wanted to train to be an Alexander teacher so that I could help others to help themselves through the technique. I graduated from the Manchester School in 2006 and have been busy teaching ever since.
I am Head of Training at Edinburgh Alexander Training School (EATS) which I set up in 2018. EATS offers full professional teacher training, as well as a 3-month Foundation Course for people who wish to deepen their Alexander skills and experience.
I am active in research on the Alexander Technique, and was part of the study team for the clinical trial of Alexander lessons for people with chronic neck pain run by the University of York. My publications include a review of the evidence for the effectiveness of Alexander lessons for different health problems, as well as articles about the neck pain trial which are published in leading international journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine. I am Chair of STAT's Research Group.
I offer individual lessons, group courses and workshops, as well as working in business & organisations such as Lush and the NHS. I also give talks and introductions to groups and societies.
