My personal Alexander story began in 1984 with a broken leg. In convalescence I saw by chance a Channel 4 documentary on the Alexander Technique, ‘A Way of Being’. I made a mental note that there was something that might help me recover when out of plaster. I was puzzled by my first lesson. It wasn’t like any dance or movement class I had done before. I gradually realised that my leg was not a mechanical part to be fixed; but part of the ‘self' that was me. I became fascinated with the practical philosophy of the Technique, and eventually left my job in book publishing to undertake a three-year Teacher Training course.
Thirty years later, I am still learning something new about the Alexander Technique every day.
I teach individual and group classes, and give introductory talks and sessions to businesses and other organisations. I am a volunteer with Side by Side Theatre Company Stourbridge, supporting the learning-disabled actors with Alexander Technique.
